Gwydir Shire Council was formed by the amalgamation of Bingara and Yallaroi Shire Councils on March 17, 2004, incorporating the towns of Bingara and Warialda and the villages of Coolatai, Cobbadah, Croppa Creek, Gravesend, North Star, Upper Horton and Warialda Rail.

The Shire covers an area of 9,121.70 square kilometres and has a population of approximately 5,790 people.

To date Council has produced two summary documents celebrating its achievements and that of its Councillors and its Staff.  The "Gwydir Snapshots' provide an insight into what a  'small' Council, with a huge heart and a positive attitude can and has accomplished.

The Council's Vision is "To be the recognised leader in Local Government through continuous learning and sustainability" and the documents illustrate that their actions speak louder than words.
